Four Styles of Shoes from How to Make Simple Shoes for Children: This video will introduce you to each of the four types of shoes you can make with the directions and patterns in this book, each with lots of variations. These four types are: the derby two-piece tie shoe, the one-piece slip-on, the 2-piece espadrille, and a sandal. .
Fiber Footwear for Children: This video shows children’s shoes and boots that have been made using patterns and directions from my book How to Make Simple Shoes for Children. Handmade wet-felt, felted wool coats and blankets, knitted/felt, crochet/felt, and denim and other sturdy fabric can be used to make children’s footwear.
How to “stitch-in” a shoe: If you like footwear that doesn’t “turn out”, as “stitch-down” shoes do – which is the process I usually teach – this video shows how you can “stitch your shoes in”. I suggest that you have some experience with making stitch-downs before attempting this process.
How to butt-stitch using the X and bar stitch: Sometimes on a shoe upper you want two pieces to butt-up against each other instead of overlapping. This most often occurs at the heel seam. This video shows you how to stitch two upper pieces together using the very strong X and bar stitch.
How to do the two-needle running stitch – also known as the simultaneous running stitch: Use this stitch whenever you want to stitch two pieces together that overlap.
How to make custom lasts part 1: It is far easier to make shoes over commercial lasts, and they are available from a Mexican company (see Materials and Tools list) at a reasonable price, but if you want to try making them yourself, here are the directions. Even if you have commercial lasts, the directions here for making patterns over lasts are useful.
This is Part One of a three-part video, that will not only show you how to make custom lasts for yourself, but will take you through the process of making a felt last filled with sand that you can use to drape your upper over when making a pair of stitch-down shoes.
How to make custom lasts part 2: The taping of the foot with duct tape continues; the tape is removed and its 3-dimensional form is flattened into a 2-dimensional form; from this a mean forme is developed, which will be used to make both the last and the shoe made over the last.
How to make custom lasts part 3: In this final section of the series “How to Make Custom Lasts”, we start with pattern-making, use the patterns to make a felt last, make a mock-up shoe over it, and try it on!
How to make Soles with an Edge: Soles with an Edge! is a product that I make and sell. It’s an outdoor sole for footwear with a band of leather standing up around its edge with holes punched in it; you can make a boot, sit it down inside the Soles with an Edge, stitch it to the edge, and create boots that can be worn outdoors.
Especially if you make shoes from fabric, you might want to make your own Soles with an Edge to complement the upper of your shoe. Of course you wouldn’t make holes in a fabric band, you would simply stitch your shoe to the band.
