Flat/skimmer/slip-on shoe patterns

Description

This is the pattern with the most style possibilities – the topline can be varied to look like a moccasin, an espadrille,  even a “wizard’s” shoe!  To see some of these styles, look in my free book Crafting Handmade Shoes under Resources.

As noted on the patterns, the challenge in making flats is that there is more upper material in the toe area than there is in the sole – this feature causes the toe area to “pop-up” and not lie  flat against your toes. To make stitchdown shoes, this may not be a problem, particularly if you have compressible upper leather – which most leather is. However, if you would like to reduce the amount of upper leather, there are alternate toe-area patterns in the pdf – one that shows you where to cut out a “v” of upper leather in the toe area, then stitch it together (or maybe this opening in the toe area is fine for you). The other shows how to make a dart in the toe area by folding the upper material over itself at the center of the toe – this works best with fabric or thin leather.
